“Shaman” (pronounced Shah-man,) is a word derived from the language of the Evenk, also called Evenki, Evenki also spelled Evenky or Ewenki, formerly known as the Tungus, the most numerous and widely scattered of the many small ethnic groups of northern Siberia (Asian Russia). The word and was adopted first by anthropologists and then by Western culture, to refer to persons previously designated by terms such as “switch, wizard, healer, magician, magic man, seer“.
